As your child moves into Years 1 and 2, we begin to prepare for middle school and beyond. Your child will spend less time moving around the classroom and more at table and chairs as they transition away from child-initiated learning to a more academic focus. Crucially, we continue to adapt the education to your child, not your child to our education, because playing to your child’s interests and ensuring they know their individual worth is all-important.
Maths and English are the focus of the mornings before busy brains flag, afternoons bring more creative subjects. Our assessment is ongoing to ensure that we constantly tailor learning to your child’s needs in small groups. These groups are fluid, changing as your child develops. Our bespoke approach means that we even adjust groups within subjects to support your child – they might be in one group for number bonds but another for fractions, for example.
In Years 1 and 2 your child will add Technology and Drama to the list of specialist teachers from Reception: PE, Music, Coding, French and Forest School.
As well as bringing real expertise and passion for their subjects, specialist teachers prepare your child for middle school by helping them adapt to different styles and approaches. Parents tell us that having more people invested in your child provides specialised insight into their development. For us as a school, it adds to the holistic picture; if we learn of gross motor difficulties from PE staff, we can support your child in the classroom, and vice versa.
