Philosophy

Geography is a highly valued part of the curriculum at DHS. It provides a means of exploring, appreciating and understanding the world in which we live and how it has evolved. Geography explores the relationship between the Earth and its people.

Geography stimulates curiosity and imagination and we aim to build upon the child’s “personal geography” by developing geographical skills, understanding and knowledge through studying places and themes.

We encourage children (P1-U8) to learn by experience and we value fieldwork and trips as an integral part of the geography Curriculum.

Curriculum

The Geography curriculum has links to the National Curriculum but explores the issues and themes further and in more depth. Junior school Geography (Years 1-3) covers Local and Global studies, Map work, continental studies, UK locations, Weather, Rwanda focus, Polar Worlds, Rainforests and other topics.

In the Upper School (years 4-8) topics for the junior school are revisited and a ‘ladder learning’ technique is used, so that pupils can progress and build on prior learning. The pupils learn about the Geography of Food, Eco Citizenship, Rivers, Settlements, Populations and Hazards. The Common Entrance syllabus is taught to years 7 and 8 in preparation for their Secondary School entrance examinations.
